Devido \u00e0 sua excelente biocompatilidade, o tit\u00e2nio e suas ligas v\u00eam sendo utilizados em implantes dent\u00e1rios e cirurgias artropl\u00e1sticas totais do quadril. Entretanto, esses implantes sofrem degrada\u00e7\u00e3o em sua superf\u00edcie, liberando \u00edons met\u00e1licos que provocam processos inflamat\u00f3rios (peri-implantite) na regi\u00e3o.<\/p>\n<p>No artigo intitulado\u00a0\u201cTrojan-Like Internalization of Anatase Titanium Dioxide Nanoparticles by Human Osteoblast Cells\u201d, publicado na Nature Scientific Reports, pesquisadores de institui\u00e7\u00f5es brasileiras \u2013 entre elas o INMETRO, UFRJ, UNESP e CBPF \u2013 e do exterior tentam desvendar algumas quest\u00f5es ligadas ao processo de internaliza\u00e7\u00e3o de nanopart\u00edculas de di\u00f3xido de tit\u00e2nio em c\u00e9lulas \u00f3sseas prim\u00e1rias.<\/p>\n<p>T\u00e9cnicas avan\u00e7adas de microscopia eletr\u00f4nica de transmiss\u00e3o como STEM-EDX, SAED, EELS e tomografia de el\u00e9trons foram usadas e mostraram que uma camada de cristais de fosfato de\u00a0 c\u00e1lcio e prote\u00ednas recobre a superf\u00edcie das nanopart\u00edculas de tit\u00e2nio o que permite sua internaliza\u00e7\u00e3o nas c\u00e9lulas.
